Review: ‘The Dirty Picture’ is a tale of love, lust and loneliness

Milan Luthria’s ‘The Dirty Picture’ is a glittering piece of cinema which recounts the life of Silk Smitha, the reigning sex siren of the 80s South Indian film industry. Starring Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor, ‘The Dirty Picture’ is the story of Reshma (Vidya), a starry-eyed, small-town girl who wants to make it big in Southern films but comes across frequent rejections until she lands up the role of an item girl, which transforms her from Reshma into Silk - a sex symbol with overnight stardom.

Alas, despite all the fame and adulation, Silk lives a turbulent life of fickle relationships and fleeting fame. The film dwells deep into the psyche of the matinee idol whose single look would make men skip a heartbeat. Back in the 80s, Silk was a stark contrast to the prudish times where her sexual overtures were hard to beat. No doubt she was the symbol of titillation and gratification, of what all men desired but did not accept it openly. While filmmakers like Abraham (Emraan) loath at the very sight of Silk, actors like Suryakant (Naseeruddin Shah) pine for her oozing sensuality. Yet, despite her raging success, the personal life of Silk is ridden with contradictions. If Suryakant fails to acknowledge his relationship with Silk, Ramakant (Tusshar) too disappoints her; as a result, Silk starts losing interest in love and her career is jeopardised. Ironically, when Silk is at the lowest ebb of her life, the only person who sticks around her is the man who hated her the most – Abraham.

In ‘The Dirty Picture’, Vidya Balan is down and dirty and delivers a power packed performance. Naseeruddin Shah plays a southern superstar with flawless ease and displays a solid persona. Emraan Hashmi looks good.

Kudos to Rajat Arora for his brisk screenplay that never loses its sight from the storyline and characterization. A Brilliant direction by Milan, ‘The Dirty Picture’ is awesome first half, though a bit dragged in second half but Vidya Balan’s powerful performance truly compensates.

The film has nice mix of South Indian music with Bollywood sounds. ‘Ooh la la la ’ and ‘Ishq Sufiyana’ is already topping the charts.

Watch ‘The Dirty Picture’ for dirtiness.

Ratings: Four cheers for this one!

World's first sex school opens in Austria

London, Dec 1 (IANS) While many people may think it's an activity which should be best learned behind closed doors, an enterprising Swedish schoolmistress thinks otherwise.
Ylva-Maria Thompson has opened the world's first international sex school for teaching the art of being better lovers, the Daily Mail reported.
The Austrian International Sex School in Vienna offers 'hands on' lessons in seduction for 1,400 pounds a term. The 'headmistress' says anyone over the age of 16 can enrol at 'the world's first college of applied sexuality'.
Students of the course are expected to stay in a co-ed dormitory block where they're expected to practice their 'homework'. By the end of their course, they are awarded a qualification.
The school head said: 'Our core education is not theoretical, but very practical. The emphasis is on how to be a better lover.
'Sexual positions, caressing techniques, anatomical features. And we teach people hands on.'
School's spokesperson Melodi Kirsch exuded confidence that the school would be a great success.
The school, however, has already turned controversial in Austria with it raunchy advertisments showing a couple making love having already invited ban by Austrian TV.

It's the biggest heartbreak ever and India is stunned.

Sachin Tendulkar is 94, incredibly close to its long-awaited 100th international ton. The big moment had promised to come the fourth day of the third test match against West Indies on Friday. But it should be. There is a deep silence in the Wankhade full. And a veil of darkness over the whole country.

Sachin had to miss Darren Sammy and Ravi Rampaul and bowling.

Anna's doublespeak: Condemns attack on Pawar, but says 'why only one slap?'

New Delhi:  In a classic case of doublespeak, veteran anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare today, in response to the attack on Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, first reacted with sarcasm and then hurriedly condemned it. (Read: Sharad Pawar slapped for 'price rise')

"He got slapped! Only one slap?" he said to a group of journalists who broke out in laughter at his reaction. But the octogenarian hastened to condemn the episode, saying such acts of violence were not good.

"He (the attacker) may be very angry. This is not good. Anger is not good. Our Constitution does not tell us to be violent with anyone," Mr Hazare told reporters in Ralegan Siddhi.

On being questioned over the Gandhian's remarks, Mr Pawar took a dig at Mr Hazare, calling him a "new Gandhian", who had given a "new definition" to the philosophy espoused by the Mahatma Gandhi. "He (Hazare) has a new definition about Gandhism. He is a new Gandhian," the Union Agriculture Minister retorted.

The Congress too criticised Mr Hazare's reaction to the attack on Mr Pawar. "There is nothing Gandhian about violence. It is a contradiction in terms. If you are Gandhian, then I think the first premise of being a Gandhian is your commitment to non-violence," party spokesperson Manish Tewari remarked.

Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Abdullah also condemned the veteran activist's remarks on the microblogging site Twitter. "I am shocked at Anna's initial reaction. God help Gandhians if this is how they justify such behavior. "Only one slap?" and then laughter!!!", Mr Abdullah tweeted.

As his 'only one slap' remark created ripples, the Gandhian clarified, saying that he was interacting with nearly 200-300 visitors when he suddenly got news of Mr Pawar which got him concerned.

"I was asking them, was he only slapped and anything else happened to him," he said. After that he spoke to the media and told them that it wasn't a slap on the face of Mr Pawar but a slap on democracy.

However, he added that the government needed to think about how to keep the anger of the aam aadmi in check. "People are angry. There is corruption and price rise...there is the issue of Jan Lokpal....people are angry over so many things," he said.

When pointed out that senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Yashwant Sinha, had warned of violence if price rise went unchecked, Mr Hazare said, "There should not be violence in a democracy."

Sharad Pawar Slapped - Sharad Pawar Slapped by Youth in Delhi

Harvinder Singh, a youth, on Thursday slapped agriculture minister Sharad Pawar at NDMC centre.
Singh attacked Pawar when he was talking to the mediapersons. He alleged that the government has failed miserably in controlling the rising prices. Pawar was coming out of the office of New Delhi Municipal Corporation after attending a function organised there.
Singh was present in the audience and slapped the minister on his face and punched in his back when the latter was trying to move out.
Singh has been taken for interrogation by the security officials. The man in question had in past attacked former telecom minister Sukhram.
